Alteration is the act of modifying rather than replacing, a shift in appearance, shape, structure, or character that leaves part of the original intact. It is the stubborn art of revision from within. This exhibition brings together three artists for whom the interior is both a room and a representation of self.

In kept + carried, Alexa Wheeler treats the ordinary object as a repository of personal and collective history. Inheritance, domestic labor, ritual, and story surface through what a household holds onto and what it hands down, the quiet acts of care that ordinarily go unnoticed. Her question, what do you still carry?, opens the work outward, proposing that memory is not simply preserved but continually made together.

In The Shape of What Was, Xinchen Li draws in three dimensions with PLA, extruding line into volume to reconstruct rooms of furniture she was forced to leave. Chairs and tables return as open contour, present in outline and hollow at the center, rebuilt by hand rather than recovered. Her work inhabits the interval between attachment and release, and asks how home is defined when it must be defined again and again.

In Structures of Approval, Anat Weiger paints in oil and watercolor, moving between figuration and psychological space. Rooms, dolls, fabrics, gestures of mending, and distorted faces surface as fragments of an inner architecture, a place where the self is formed, protected, concealed, and transformed. Tracing the need for approval to a wound inherited through generations of women, she turns from the wound itself to what has been built around it: the arranging, the repairing, the containing, the remaking.

Together the three propose that the domestic is never merely a backdrop, and that the alterations made there, quietly and repeatedly, are the ones that create a foundation for a renegotiated future.
