About Yvette Mayorga

Yvette Mayorga is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends Rococo aesthetics, confectionary techniques, and cultural symbolism to interrogate labor, immigration, and the American Dream. Rooted in personal and familial narratives, her practice subverts traditional art historical tropes by applying acrylic paint with pastry piping bags, a technique inspired by familial labor. Mayorga’s signature bubblegum pink serves as both a seductive entry point and a critical tool, embodying themes of hyper-femininity, consumerism, and resilience. Across painting, sculpture, and immersive installation, Mayorga’s practice navigates the complexities of Latinx identity, class, and surveillance, embedding pop culture references and domestic iconography within gilded, excessive compositions.

Mayorga’s work is visually opulent, yet beneath its saccharine surface lies a biting critique of systemic inequalities. Drawing from her upbringing in the Midwest as a first-generation Mexican American, Mayorga maps the intersections of colonialism and contemporary Latinx experiences, reclaiming spaces where these histories are often overlooked. Through the fusion of personal memory such as nostalgic images and pictures from her family archives, and art historical interventions, she creates a visual language that challenges traditional narratives while celebrating the resilience of her community.
